Supervisor Warren Slocum
President, Board of Supervisors
In January 2013, Supervisor Warren Slocum began his term as Supervisor in San Mateo County.
Supervisor Slocum serves on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors as the representative of the 4th Supervisorial District. This district includes the cities of Redwood City, East Palo Alto, the areas within the City of Menlo Park east of El Camino Real and including Belle Haven, and the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks.
Priorities
All over the world, and in San Mateo County, the ladder of prosperity for far too many is missing too many rungs. Despite our region’s massive job growth, the issues surrounding “equity” have never been more glaring or challenging.
Vast disparities exist in San Mateo County and we know that systemic inequality diminishes us all. Nelson Mandela said, “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.”
North Fair Oaks and East Palo Alto are among the most culturally diverse areas in the County and have much in common—residents committed to strengthening families, advancing educational achievement, and fostering community connections.
To honor the diversity in his district and across the county, Supervisor Slocum’s top priority is making advances in the county through the lenses of equity and social progress. This includes working collaboratively building more affordable housing, moving the needle to resolve homelessness particularly for families and veterans, and reducing traffic congestion.
Supervisor Slocum works closely with people from every quarter of the community – faith-based, business, youth, renters, homeowners, schools, nonprofits and interested individuals.
Prior County Service
Prior to his election to the Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Slocum served as the Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder of San Mateo County.
As County Clerk, he was the first in the nation to offer couples the opportunity to broadcast their wedding ceremonies on the internet so that families and friends all over the world could share these special moments.
As the Chief Elections Officer, he introduced accessible voting equipment with language and adaptive features to ensure that ALL voters could participate in fair, private and secure elections.
As Recorder, he oversaw the conversion of recorded paper documents to recorded electronic documents and the creation of a publicly searchable database which made it easy to research property information.
Early Life and Family
As a young man, Supervisor Slocum was raised by a single father and lived in San Diego. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam for one year – he was honorably discharged in 1969. He then attended San Diego State University where he earned his B.S. Degree in History.
Supervisor Slocum has a passion for family, public service, technology, and history. His wife, Maria Diaz-Slocum, and their two sons (and our dog, Crockett and cat, Max) have made their home in Redwood City for more than 30 years. Their sons were educated in the public school system and his wife is an elected Trustee of the Redwood City School District. They love this community and feel fortunate to call the Peninsula home.
