As a San Mateo County Supervisor, I am committed to finding smart and innovative solutions to reduce the region’s growing issue of housing and homelessness -- which greatly impacts residents of San Mateo County.
Home For All
Between 2010 and 2016, San Mateo County gained 79,000 new jobs, but only built 3,844 new housing units. With more jobs available than homes, rents have skyrocketed, and affordable homes are harder to find.
When Supervisor Don Horsley and I were appointed to the "Jobs - Housing Taskforce" five years ago, the jobs-housing gap in San Mateo County was 24:1. Since then, the task force has been renamed "Home for All," and has reduced the jobs-housing gap to 11:1. We have made great progress, but there is clearly still a long way to go.
That’s why I support solutions to create more affordable homes for residents, reduce traffic, and make San Mateo County a place everyone can call home. Let’s find a Home for All.
Affordable Housing
Over the past few years, I have prioritized increasing affordable housing designated for low-income residents, particularly seniors, veterans, and families. In 2019, I was able to attend the groundbreaking for two new affordable apartment complexes in District 4 for a total of 184 new units.
This is just a small piece of our housing effort. In 2020, the 180-unit Middlefield Junction project near the Fair Oaks Community Center will break ground. Across the County, there are a total of 1374 units set to be built in the next three years with 25% of units for the formerly homeless.

Homelessness
The vision is that within the next five years, homelessness will be a rare, brief, and one-time occurrence:
Rare: Whenever possible, the system will prevent vulnerable individuals and families from falling into homelessness.
Brief: A system will be in place to ensure that any household experiencing a crisis of homelessness returns to housing within 30 days.
One-time: Individuals and families that secure housing through the crisis response system will not return to homelessness.
