San Mateo County Parks Natural Resource Management (NRM) is working with Go Native Inc. and University of California Botanic Garden at Berkeley to protect, restore, and expand the growth of Leptosiphon croceus, a threatened flowering plant with only one remaining naturally occurring population.
From a supply of seeds collected from the remaining population and from a cache of 100,000 new leptosiphon seeds grown in a nursery by Go Native, NRM staff have been directly seeding areas to create new leptosiphon populations along the San Mateo County coast. Replanted areas are monitored to discover which conditions most favor regrowth and will allow leptosiphon to thrive into the future.
